From 2012-2015 I lived in and managed an artist loft in Chicago's Wicker Park district. We called it The Transient Loft, as it became a welcoming home to all creatives no matter their background and orientation. Along with five other women, I helped form a feminist group based in the loft. We called ourselves Disorderly Conversions, reclaiming the term 'conversion disorder' or 'female hysteria', a controversial medical diagnosis often given to women in the 19th century who had a 'tendency to cause trouble'. Disorderly Conversions hosted regular events for our community of 200+ including Drink N Draw, a monthly studio drawing session with live models. Secret of the High Priestess, our multimedia group show "crafted especially for artists and creative types who find themselves otherworldly, and for those who are simply intrigued by the magic and the mystique of the feminine" (Morgan Claire, curator) sold out in one night. Supporting Chicago's vulnerable creative community by providing a safe space to grow and express ourselves was some of my most important work.
